Read
Use the washing, drying, ironing and temperature guidance specified for that particular garment.
Refresh
Wash when it is needed. Between wears, let garments air and address small marks with spot cleaning before opting for a complete wash.
Protect
If the label permits washing, choose a mild detergent and a low temperature, and handle the fabric with care.
Preserve
Put pieces away clean and dry, protecting them from humidity, friction and extended exposure to sunlight.
The material guide
These are general recommendations. Always give priority to the garment's care label.
Arrange professional dry cleaning if the instructions require it. Where hand washing is allowed, choose cool water and a detergent intended for delicates. Avoid rubbing, wringing or lengthy soaking. Dry out of direct sunlight, and apply steam gently from the reverse side.
Take care to prevent lace, beads, sequins, appliqués and hooks from catching or snagging. Professional cleaning is often the safest choice. Do not rub embellished sections or place an iron directly on decorative details. Lay the garment flat for storage, or leave enough room to keep its trims from being compressed.
Follow the stated washing method. If hand washing is permitted, support the wet garment and do not twist it. Ease it back into shape on a flat towel and leave it to dry naturally. Store knits folded: hanging can stretch both the shoulders and the length.
Reduce washing frequency where practical. If machine washing is approved on the label, turn the denim inside out, select cool water and wash alongside similar colors. Air drying helps retain its shape and color. Avoid long periods in direct sunlight, which can fade the fabric unevenly.
Let pieces air between wears and remove surface dust with light brushing. Follow any dry-clean-only directions. Place jackets and coats on shaped hangers, empty their pockets before putting them away, and allow air to circulate rather than keeping them sealed in plastic for extended periods.
Wash in cool water or at a low temperature only if the care label allows it. Reshape while the fabric is still damp and air-dry when possible. For steaming or ironing, use the temperature stated on the label. Linen's natural creases are part of its character and need not always be pressed out completely.
High temperatures can weaken stretch fibers and change a garment's shape. Respect dry-clean-only directions where given, and tumble dry only when explicitly allowed. During storage, avoid making sharp folds through boning, cups or structured panels.
Cleaning, drying & finishing
Handle with less friction, limit heat and allow enough time.
Spot cleaning
Use a clean, light-colored cloth to blot a fresh mark. Scrubbing can spread a stain or affect the fabric's surface. Try any treatment on an inconspicuous area first. For delicate, colored or embellished fabrics, ask a professional for advice.
Washing
If machine washing is permitted, secure the fastenings and turn the garment inside out. Place delicate items in a laundry bag, group similar colors together and leave the machine enough room rather than overfilling it.
Drying
Choose air drying when the label allows it. Hang woven pieces carefully and lay knitwear flat to dry. Keep garments away from radiators and prolonged strong sunlight. Tumble drying should be used only when expressly permitted.
Steaming & ironing
Test steaming first and keep a short distance from the fabric. When appropriate, iron on the reverse with a pressing cloth. Keep direct heat away from lace, sequins, prints, faux leather, coated materials and delicate trims.
Storage & protection
Thoughtful storage helps protect a piece's color, shape and details.
